A major winter storm is expected to push into the West Coast this weekend, creating a dangerous storm system for Christmas travelers.

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles has issued a winter storm watch for the region from Saturday evening through Sunday morning, and in the metro areas of Seattle, Portland, and San Diego, the watch is in effect until at least Tuesday morning.

Between Friday and Saturday, forecasters expect 1 to 3 inches of snow at elevations of 4,000 feet and 1 to 3 inches at elevations above 7,000 feet.

Snow is predicted to remain in the Inland Empire region through Sunday, when rain is expected to return. By Monday, the area is expected to dry out and the snow level is predicted to drop to 3,000 feet.

Travel delays in the region are possible, especially during highway closures. Meanwhile, Caltrans may be forced to close some state highways.

Inland Southern California may experience some snow showers Saturday, according to the weather service. However, most of the region is expected to remain dry on Saturday.
