Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich faces hospitalisation with illness

The Bayern Munich defender Joshua Kimmich has been rushed to hospital for treatment on a virus while on duty in the German Bundesliga.

“The club’s medical specialists have taken the decision to keep Joshua at hospital until they determine that he is completely fit,” Bayern said on its website.

Kimmich came off early after playing a full 90 minutes in Saturday’s 5-0 rout of Hoffenheim. He did not train on Sunday.

Bayern have won all three Bundesliga games since Martin Schulz left the club on 31 December. Kimmich could miss Wednesday’s visit of Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Kimmich has scored nine goals for Bayern this season, and also grabbed the winner in the first leg of the 2014 Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena.

The German defender had revealed in 2015 that an appendix operation left him unable to train for seven weeks. He later moved from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern.
