Mike Pence Continues to Visit FEMA Officials in Puerto Rico

“Today,” Vice President Joe Biden announced Thursday, “I’m making it clear that FEMA will have a full team of federal disaster responders here in Puerto Rico to ensure local leaders have every resource they need.”

As the Times’ Isabel Vincent reported earlier, the storm has caused devastation across the island: “On Thursday morning, 400 National Guard members were getting started at a staging base in San Juan to help with relief efforts, according to the governor’s office. By early evening the number had grown to more than 1,500.”

Biden, along with the president, the vice president, and the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Brock Long, spent hours in the Ponce, Puerto Rico, area on Thursday to survey the damage and meet with families who had fled to the mainland.

The department also deployed disaster relief vehicles and supplies for distribution to towns on the island and they are working to restock the local hospital, create housing assistance programs and dispatch additional resources to areas that need it most.
