The Women’s Executive Transportation Association is one of a few women-led and -run business organizations in Washington. Started in 1985, it has more than 400 women on its board and about 600 members on its mailing list. It has a congressional chapter that helps introduce members to Congressional connections and a national and international chapter.
Its inaugural tournament was held this year in December, and the primary event will be held next May in Atlanta. The tournament includes various tracks that participants will be able to qualify for.
According to Calderon, there are 25 pilots registered with WETA, which has about 22,000 members. She will be flying in the WATA Female Pilot Championship, along with 14 other pilots, who will qualify for those flights. Calderon says she has flown in the championships twice. She is also going to be competing in the four-man crew classic category. The contest will be held in New York.
She has competed at the same event every year since it began in 2015. Calderon says having female pilots traveling with her on many days will mean she will be able to enjoy the life of a full-time professional pilot.
Calderon says the sport is on the rise.
